Recorded in 1998
Arnold and I have been friends and colleagues since 1988, in Seattle, when we met and started the group Timebone together at Cornish College of the Arts, along with J. Granelli and Briggan Krauss. We kept that group together, played a bunch of gigs and made a couple of recordings which were well received in the Seattle jazz scene. We both moved to Brooklyn in the early 90s, attracted by the jazz and downtown scenes, inspired by our trips to the Banff Centre summer jazz workshops, and following in the footsteps of other young Seattle jazz musicians who’d come before us. We were very inspired by our mentors at Cornish College – Jim Knapp, Jerry Granelli, Julian Priester, Jay Clayton, Gary Peacock, Hadley Caliman, Janice Giteck, Jared Powell, Matt Kocmieroski, Randy Halberstadt, Chuck Deardorf.

The 90s was a fertile time to be in Park Slope/Prospect Heights Brooklyn, where we both lived. The Knitting Factory had four different stages you could perform new music at, and you didn’t really have to draw a big crowd for all the spaces. We most often played gigs at the Alter-Knit, the small room but we loved it and were lucky to be able to get a gig to try new music almost whenever we wanted. So many different combinations we tried out in those years.

This recording came out of a desire to work together with Arnold again with some relatively new colleagues who we greatly respected, Greg Wall(tenor sax) and Ethan Iverson(piano), and one very long-time friend/colleague, John Silverman (bass) who had been living in Paris for many years and happened to be coming through the city on the way to a visit back home to Seattle. We got together once and rehearsed some new music, and then went into the studio.

Arnold had been studying both counterpoint, and diving deep into the music of Abdullah Ibrahim and Horace Silver. I’d been experimenting with making Loop forms for structured improvisation. The tunes we contributed are very different in style but are all played with intensity and focus by the group which gives the recording a nice unity, even with the diversity of styles. John Silverman adds a beautifully written piece, Foamy, to the mix.

We made this recording and then all went our separate ways, at the time being so busy and never even really attempted to send it to a label or try to sell it. It didn’t feel right at the time. So we shelved it.
Recently, with the advent of Bandcamp, and the ease of self releasing things, as well as having extra time because of the pandemic, we discovered this recording and 25 years later, gave another listen. We love it! Let’s put it out! We had to ask permission of the other musicians, who have all gone on to do wonderful things, and they all agreed. So here it is for you to enjoy as well. Hope you like it.
