CD Release Announcement! 5/30/03
Aaron Alexander Sextet
"Blues for Sparky"

All compositions by Aaron Alexander except #15, by Leonard Bernstein, arranged by Aaron Alexander

Announcing the first CD release as a leader from drummer and composer Aaron Alexander, a showcase for his melodic jazz compositions, with a group that provides great ensemble playing and strong solos in the jazz tradition.
Alexander is known as the drummer in such innovative jazz groups as BABKAS (with Brad Shepik and Briggan Krauss), Hasidic New Wave, Satoko Fujii Orchestra, Jay Clayton/Jim Knapp Collective, Tronzo Trio and Timebone. His appearances with The Klezmatics, Frank London’s Klezmer Brass All-Stars, Boban Markovic Orkestar, Susan Watts/Hoffman, Mikveh, The Mazeltones and Margot Leverett have brought him acclaim in the klezmer and world music scenes. In 2001 Alexander conceived and co-produced Hasidic New Wave’s acclaimed collaboration with Senegalese Sabar ensemble Yakar Rhythms, entitled "From the Belly of Abraham," on Knitting Factory Records
The new CD "Blues for Sparky" is made up entirely of Alexander originals, save for one arrangement of the jazz standard ‘Some other Time.’ Alexander does four short improvised drum solos as well, highlighting his melodic phrasing and using a broad palette of sounds.

"Alexander is an all-around musician whose playing, while often complicated, isn’t intrusive or heavy. A real team man, Alexander leaves room for (others) to stretch out." Harvey Pekar, The Boston Herald

For his debut CD as a leader Alexander has put together a group of great players from the New York jazz scene who have a history playing together, a great rapport and an ensemble sound.
Saxophonist Greg Wall, is co-leader of Hasidic New Wave, and teaches Jazz Studies at Rutgers University.

Trumpeter Andy Gravish has performed with Buddy Rich, Artie Shaw, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Orange then Blue, Gunther Schuller and Tony Bennett.

Trombonist Ben Williams has performed with George Coleman, Claudio Roditi, Oliver Lake and The Composers Big Band.

Pianist Mitch Schechter has performed with Andy Statman, Crossing Point, Vic Juris, Gary Mazaroppi, and others.

Bassist Brian Glassman has performed with Lionel Hampton, John & Bucky Pizzarelli, Paquito DiRivera, Benny Golson, Dr. Billy Taylor, James Moody, and Benny Carter.
